Day Treatment Alternative (DISC)
DISC stands for Day In School Counseling and was begun several years ago in collaboration with the Department of Social Services. Funded by core service dollars, this voluntary program is a more intensive option for kids who are displaying serious behavior problems at school and may have other mental health and/or family concerns as well.
DISC includes individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy when available, case management, and incentives for behavior. Incentives are an important component of this program, because the kids typically enrolled in DISC need external motivation to positively change their behavior at first. Based on the attainment of ongoing goals, kids can earn small rewards and eventually gift cards to use as they wish, with the ultimate goal being the intrinsic or internal rewards for positive behavior rather than the external ones.
Kids are referred to the DISC program through the schools, Social Services, mental health, and sometimes other community agencies such as CET or Diversion. A parent must be willing to have an assigned Social Service caseworker and a treatment plan at DSS in order for the child to participate. DISC covers the cost of therapy, case management, and incentives.
