Individual, Group, Couples/Family Outpatient Therapy
While most of our therapy is provided individually, we often find that problems an individual is experiencing are best addressed in a family or group setting. For example, treatment of children almost always includes parents and/or other family members, due to the fact that the child is experiencing difficulty within a system, not in isolation. Parents are given support and education about how to help their children resolve those difficulties, and the clinician may also work with the child's school, Social Services, or any other agency with which the child is involved. Our adult clients also need support from partners or family members, and with our client's consent, we can include those significant people in the client's treatment.
We also can provide couples' therapy for people experiencing problems in their relationship. We do not provide domestic violence counseling for people charged with domestic violence nor do we evaluate situations for the lifting of restraining orders. There are other professionals in the community certified in that type of work to whom we can refer.
Group therapy is often overlooked as an option or regarded as the least desirable option for treatment. However, a lot of research has shown that group therapy is highly effective in particular circumstances, sometimes more so than individual therapy. An added benefit for clients is that they get to share with others who are going through similar situations, thus providing extra support and feedback for everyone in the group. Most of our Substance Abuse treatment is done in a group setting. DBT and Women's Recovery are two examples of groups that have been successful at Craig Mental Health.
